Every year on July 8, Orthodox believers honor the memory of Peter and Fevronia of Murom. The saints are honored as the patrons of the family hearth, they are prayed to for a happy marriage, the birth of healthy children, and the establishment of peace and harmony between relatives. Peter and Fevronia were canonized in the XVI century, but in Murom they began to be honored as saints already in the XIII century. The life description of the spouses was compiled by a famous writer of that time, Ermolai-Yerazm, on the basis of Murom legends and legends. Thanks to him, the love story of the prince and the peasant woman was recognized by the whole country, and Peter and Fevronia became an example of fidelity and piety.

According to legend, the heir to the throne of Murom, Peter, decided to save the wife of his brother, Prince Paul, from the winged serpent. He found a marvelous sword and slaughtered the monster, but after that he fell ill with leprosy. In search of a skillful healer, the prince arrived in the village of Laskovo near Ryazan, where he met a peasant girl, Fevronia. The girl promised to cure the sick man if he would take her as his wife.

The prince agreed, but after getting rid of the painful ulcers, broke his word and left back to Murom. On the way, however, the disease returned, and Peter was forced to turn to Fevronia again. Having recovered for the second time, he married his savior. After that, the spouses never parted again. They went into exile together when the boyars refused to accept the prince and his commoner wife, and together they returned to Murom to stop the feud that had begun in the city.

Even death could not separate the saints. In their old age Peter and Fevronia retired to different monasteries, but bequeathed to bury them in a common coffin. After the death of the spouses, the monks wanted to separate them, because a joint burial contradicted the monastic way of life. However, in the morning the bodies of Peter and Fevronia miraculously appeared next to each other again. After that, no one dared to oppose the last will of the saints.

Today, on Peter and Fevronia Day, many churches hold special prayer services aimed at strengthening family bonds. The faithful come to the Holy Trinity Monastery in Murom to worship the relics of the saints. Many Russians give their loved ones daisies, the main symbol of the holiday.

One of the easiest ways to congratulate loved ones on Peter and Fevronia Day is to send a postcard in messenger. Every year, thousands of users exchange colorful pictures and warm wishes in WhatsApp (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist and banned in Russia), Viber, Telegram, VKontakte and other platforms.
