Putin signed a law on installing RuStore on Apple gadgets
On July 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law prohibiting the American company Apple from preventing the installation of the unified Russian RuStore app store on its smartphones, tablets and other devices. The relevant document is posted on the official Internet portal of legal information.
"[It is supposed to pre—install RuStore] when selling and using certain types of technically complex goods with pre-installed programs for electronic computers, including a single application store," the text of the law says.
The document regulates the distribution of software used by citizens on various devices, from smartphones to tablets. In particular, it aims to make it possible for Apple to install RuStore on its products.
It is specified that from September 1, a ban on any conditions that restrict or exclude the use of Russian applications and the "single app store" will come into force.
In addition, all equipment that goes on sale in Russia with pre-installed software must provide the ability to install, update, and pay for Russian programs through a single app store.
Ekaterina Kosareva, Managing partner of the VMT Consult analytical agency, told Izvestia on June 2 that the Federation Council had approved a law requiring the installation of the Russian RuStore app store on Apple devices sold in Russia. This is part of the policy on import substitution and digital sovereignty. However, for ordinary users and developers, the law raises a number of practical issues.
