The light from the phone can disrupt the production of melatonin, which in turn threatens insomnia. On June 7, Darya Lebedeva, a somnologist and endocrinologist at the Central Clinical Hospital with the Polyclinic of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, told Gazeta.Ru».

"Blue light suppresses melatonin production. Our brain perceives blue light as a wake signal, which is why falling asleep is delayed," the expert said.

According to Lebedeva, the time spent before going to bed behind the smartphone screen leads to a violation of the internal clock, that is, the body, feeling very tired, will remain awake at the sight of bright light. Prolonged disruption of the circadian rhythm can lead to chronic sleep deprivation, which in turn increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and mental health problems.

"Correspondence, news, social media, video content — all this causes the release of cortisol, the stress hormone. As a result, the nervous system remains tense and it becomes more difficult to fall asleep," the doctor said.

According to the expert, replacing gadgets with paper books a few hours before bedtime can help relax the nervous system. In addition, she also recommended moving the smartphone charger from the bedroom to another room.

On July 3, Irina Volgina, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia about the dangers of chronic sleep deprivation. The doctor notes that this weakens the immune response not only to infections, but also to oncological processes and autoimmune disorders.
