American entrepreneur Elon Musk has asked his close friend to be appointed head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), US President Donald Trump said on July 6.

"Elon asked that one of his close friends be appointed to lead NASA. I thought his friend was a good specialist, but I was surprised that he turned out to be a staunch Democrat who had never supported Republicans before," he wrote on the Truth Social network.

The American leader suggested that Musk held the same views and considered it inappropriate to appoint his friend as head of management, given that NASA is closely linked to the entrepreneur's business.

On June 13, the Reuters news agency reported that the White House had instructed the US Department of Defense and NASA to study information about the contracts of the SpaceX space technology company. The publication also noted that representatives of the Pentagon are simultaneously considering whether to reduce the role that SpaceX can win in the ambitious new US missile defense system.
