- Temporary control on the borders with Germany and Lithuania has begun to operate in Poland.
Poland has temporarily restored border controls with Germany and Lithuania in order to ensure the security of the state. This was reported on July 7 by TVP Info TV channel with reference to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Tomasz Semoniak.
"We are ready to implement the decision on temporary control at the borders of Germany and Lithuania," he is quoted as saying in the publication.
Semonyak clarified that 52 checkpoints had been set up on the Polish-German and 13 on the Polish—Lithuanian borders to ensure temporary border control. At the same time, 800 officers of the republic's border guard service, as well as 300 police officers, 200 representatives of the gendarmerie and 0.5 thousand soldiers of the territorial defense forces will take part in the control.
It is noted that the relevant decision was made as part of Poland's ongoing fight against illegal migration and it is not aimed at residents of the republic or citizens of other EU countries.
The Minister stressed that the services aimed at implementing this task will try to make inspections as convenient as possible for residents of border areas.
On July 3, the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army, Weslaw Kukula, announced the dispatch of 5,000 troops to the borders with Germany and Lithuania for border control in connection with illegal migration. He stressed that the army's duty is to protect the borders of the state.
