BRICS intends to establish a space council

The BRICS member countries have agreed to establish the association's Space Council in order to enhance cooperation in the field of space and the balanced development of space capabilities within the group. This is stated in the final declaration of the unification summit in Rio de Janeiro, published on July 6.
"We agree in principle to establish the BRICS Space Council and continue working on its terms of reference in order to promote further cooperation in the field of space activities within the framework of the association," the publication says.
In addition, the BRICS countries stressed the importance of cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space, based on peaceful purposes. They also confirmed their "commitment to reducing existing asymmetries in the space potential" of the member States.
The States recognized that the exchange of data and practices in the space sector is extremely important in the framework of cooperation between thematic agencies. That is why they reacted positively to the initiative related to the introduction of a joint newsletter as a mechanism for exchanging information and promoting proposals to increase space potential.
The leaders of the BRICS countries stated that they oppose the arms race, the deployment of weapons, and the use of force in outer space. They also proposed to adopt the relevant document.
Earlier, on June 20, Mikhail Kovalchuk, president of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NRC), told Izvestia that cooperation between Russia and China in the scientific field was "moving at full speed." On May 9, the two countries signed a number of agreements in the field of nuclear energy, lunar exploration and space exploration.
