In the period from June 21 to July 5, the number of earthquakes near the Japanese Tokara Islands exceeded 1.3 thousand. This was announced on July 5 by representatives of the country's Meteorological Agency during an emergency press conference in the village of Toshima.
According to the data provided, between 08:00 on June 21, local time (02:00 Moscow time) and 07:00 on July 5 (01:00 Moscow time), more than 1.3 thousand earthquakes with a magnitude over 1 were recorded, of which five seismic events with a magnitude from 5 to 6 points.
It is noted that the last earthquake occurred on Saturday morning, July 5, at 06:29 local time (00:29 Moscow time). Its magnitude was 5.4 points. The source of the natural disaster lay at a depth of 19 km under water, the threat of a tsunami was not announced.
"The risk of future earthquakes is increasing. <...> Currently, the maximum seismic intensity is about 6 points," said a representative of the Meteorological Agency of Japan during the conference, which was broadcast on their YouTube channel.
NHK TV channel reported on March 31 that over 290 thousand Japanese residents would die due to a powerful earthquake that could occur in the next 30 years in the Nankai fault. According to government estimates, the economic damage could reach $1.81 trillion, and the number of victims could reach 300,000.
