The United States has threatened to impose trade duties of 17% on imported European agricultural products against the European Union (EU). This was reported on July 4 by the Financial Times newspaper.

"The United States has threatened to impose 17% duties on agricultural exports from the EU as part of the trade conflict with Brussels. <...> It is still unclear whether 17% duties on food products will be imposed in addition to other tariffs announced by [US President Donald] Trump, or instead of them," the publication says..

It is clarified that the United States took this step before the EU was supposed to conclude a deal with them on July 9. According to the newspaper's sources, Trump also demanded that Brussels provide benefits to American companies and reduce its trade surplus with the United States, to which European officials refused.

On May 26, Trump agreed to postpone the imposition of duties of 50% on EU goods to July 9. According to him, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asked about this during a telephone conversation. Bloomberg reported on June 24 that EU countries are preparing to take retaliatory measures if the United States imposes duties on goods from Europe.
