More than 400 dolphins washed ashore on the island of Pemba in Tanzania, seven of them died. This was announced on July 4 by Makeme Omara, Director of the Department of Marine Environment Protection from the Ministry of Economy and Fisheries of Zanzibar.

According to him, the incident occurred on the night of June 30 to July 1. Seven dolphins died before help arrived, but the rest were returned to deep waters thanks to the prompt actions of local fishermen and marine service specialists.

"It happens that dolphins lose their bearings in the sea, but emissions of this scale are rare in Zanzibar," Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying.

Makeme explained that dolphins navigate using echolocation, a mechanism that allows them to recognize objects by sound reflection. In his opinion, the pack could be disoriented by changes in weather conditions, underwater obstacles, or chasing prey too close to shore.

On February 19, ABC TV channel reported on more than 150 small killer whales that washed ashore in the Australian state of Tasmania. According to preliminary estimates, they were stranded for 24 to 48 hours. The cause of the animal release was unknown.
