The United States should invest more actively in the development of low-cost unilateral short-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are often more effective in modern military conflicts than more powerful and expensive systems. As the American magazine Foreign Affairs pointed out on July 4, otherwise America may lose its ability to win on the battlefield.

This should come as no surprise: according to Ukrainian officials, single—use attack drones are now responsible for 70% of frontline casualties in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The cost of each such UAV is estimated at no more than a few thousand dollars. However, despite their obvious advantages, the Pentagon spends tens of billions of dollars annually on maintaining and modernizing aircraft carriers, F-35 fighter jets, and tanks. The U.S. Department of Defense has invested only $500 million in low-cost drones in the first part of the Replicator initiative in 2023, the newspaper notes.

"The United States must make up for lost time and develop cheap but accurate unmanned systems... If the Pentagon does not adapt to the new realities of wars, it will lose the ability to deter enemy aggression before it occurs, and possibly the ability to win them," the article says.

On May 7, the Pentagon announced the receipt of permanent funding for the modernization of the nuclear capabilities of the Air Force The United States is its top priority. According to the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, David Alvin, the Ministry of Defense now faces many key tasks, including the modernization of fighters and bombers.
