The case of Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan is being considered by a judge with a low rating. Mika Badalyan, a public figure and member of the Board of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization Eurasia, told Izvestia on July 4.

He noted that the last meeting of the Court of Appeal left the decision on the arrest of the head of the Tashir group of companies unchanged.

"Common sense has not won, and Samvel Karapetyan will remain under arrest. In fact, the absurdity prevails around everything that is happening with the Court of Appeal, as in everything else. Because after the judge, who has the lowest rating among judges, was appointed in record time, as everyone knows that he obeys any order from the authorities, Samvel Karapetyan's defense rejected the appeal, but no one considered it," the expert noted.

Badalyan also said that Karapetyan's lawyers have filed lawsuits against two deputies of the ruling party. However, given the state of the judicial system in the country, there are practically no prospects for these cases, he believes.

A rally in support of the arrested man is currently taking place in the park near Mashtots Avenue in Yerevan. Izvestia's footage from the scene shows that Karapetyan's supporters came to a public rally with his portrait on posters.

On Wednesday, the Armenian parliament adopted a law according to which the process of nationalization of the Electric Networks of Armenia company is actually starting in the country, Badalyan noted. In his opinion, the government's goal is to finally sever ties between Armenia and Russia in the energy sector.

Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18, he was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia and arrested for two months. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan called the businessman's detention an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC).
