The most unpopular among car thieves are models with advanced standard immobilizers and new-generation telematics. Auto experts in the press service of Avtospeccenter Group told about this on Friday, July 4. Experts also reported on effective measures to protect cars from theft.

"According to the Russian Interior Ministry, Hyundai and Kia cars were stolen most often in 2024, and models with advanced standard immobilizers and new—generation telematics, such as Mazda, Volkswagen and premium Chinese segment cars, including EXEED and TANK, remained the least "popular" among the hijackers," auto experts said in an interview with Lenta.Ru.

According to experts, resistance to theft is determined not so much by the cost of the car as by the level of integration of electronic protection systems.

"Among the most effective solutions, multilevel approaches stand out: the hidden installation of an additional immobilizer, locking systems for the standard CAN-bus protocol, as well as satellite monitoring with constant transmission of coordinates and remote engine muffling," the company noted, adding that systems with remote owner verification via a mobile application are especially popular, which virtually eliminates the possibility of hijacking using key signal repeaters.

According to experts, cars combining complex electronic architecture, integration with telematics and the use of modern anti-theft systems are the least likely to be stolen.

At the same time, experts stressed that even the most secure car can be stolen if basic precautions are ignored — from parking in safe, lighted locations to not using standard protection.

On June 11, auto expert Maxim Pastushenko, in an interview with RT, called the only reliable way to protect a car from theft. The specialist said that the mechanical protection of the steering wheel, gearbox or pedal assembly is hacked within three minutes, and the electronic system — within 10 seconds.

In April, the director of the public organization "Hijacking.no," Dmitry Andreev said that in order to minimize the likelihood of car theft, it is necessary to install additional anti-theft equipment: an alarm system, an immobilizer, mechanical protection, search beacons, engine blocking, a standard radio channel and digital buses. 360.ru .

At the same time, it was reported that the number of carjackings in Russia increased dramatically in 2025. In the first three months, the number of thefts increased by 70% compared to the same period of the previous year. Most often, cars are stolen for disassembly into parts. Korean Hyundai and Kia are among the most in demand among criminals. Chinese Chery and Haval are also popular with hijackers.

In turn, Ilya Plisov, a member of the board of the Union of Car Services, Deputy General Director of EuroAuto, explained in an interview with NSN that the frequent theft of "Koreans", "Chinese", as well as the Russian automotive industry is explained by their mass appeal.
