When preparing for a vacation during pregnancy, it is important to understand that now rest is not just a change of scenery, but above all, taking care of yourself and your future baby. Sometimes rules and prohibitions confuse a woman, but they are needed not to intimidate the expectant mother, but to make the trip safe and enjoyable. Elina Dedegkaeva, an obstetrician—gynecologist of the highest category, told Izvestia about this on July 7.
Before the vacation, the doctor who manages the pregnancy should consult. He will assess the condition and tell you if there are any contraindications for the trip. He will also give advice on preparation — this is especially important if you have chronic illnesses or high blood pressure.
"If the doctor has given the go-ahead, you can start looking for a place to rest. It is better to choose a temperate climate, without high temperatures and humidity. Heat and stuffiness put pressure on the heart and blood vessels, increase the risk of dehydration and can provoke uterine contractions. If you decide to fly, for example, to tropical countries, do not forget to drink a lot, relax in the shade and choose light clothes made of natural fabrics so as not to overheat," advised the gynecologist.
It is best to fly by plane in the second trimester of pregnancy, usually from the 14th to the 28th week. During this period, the body gets used to the changes, the toxicosis passes, and the stress on the body is still not very great. In the first and third trimesters, the risk of complications is higher, so you need to monitor your health more closely and communicate with your doctor more often.
"During the long journey, do not forget about the condition of the veins. For example, special compression stockings help to maintain it. They reduce swelling and blood pressure. While you are on the road, do a little exercise every hour and a half. You can walk a little or do some leg exercises. Even simple flexion and extension of the feet will help improve blood circulation," Dedegkaeva suggested.
In addition, according to her, it is better not to experiment with food on vacation. The diet should be habitual and balanced. You don't need to try a lot of exotic food or buy it at dubious stalls, such as at a train station or on the street. It is better to include in the diet foods rich in protein, iron, calcium and vitamins, especially folic acid and B vitamins.
Another important tip is to check the documents. A medical record with tests and medical reports should always be at hand. Before leaving, you should find the nearest hospital in your vacation spot to protect yourself from force majeure.
Physical activity on vacation should be moderate. Light walks, breathing exercises and rest help to maintain tone and well-being. It is better to avoid steep climbs, prolonged loads and overexertion.
"As for tanning, you should also be careful with it. The skin becomes more sensitive during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Therefore, use sunscreen, wear a hat and do not go outside during the peak of solar activity, namely from 12 to 16 o'clock," the doctor warned.
