The main signs of workaholism are regular unnecessary overwork and the inability to switch to other activities, even on weekends. How to recognize your work addiction and regain control of your life. On July 5, on the Day of the Workaholic, Svetlana Semerenko, a career expert at the Professions of the Future Center, told Izvestia.

"If, when meeting with friends, you can't get away from obsessive thoughts about work, you don't let go of your phone, you constantly check business correspondence and corporate mail, and you build a to—do list for tomorrow in your head, then this is a serious reason to think and reconsider your priorities," Semerenko said.

She added that the lack of a work-life balance can not only have a bad effect on the quality of tasks and assignments from management, but also deprive a person of quality sleep, rest and adversely affect his health.

Another worrying sign is the perception of fatigue as a sign of success. According to the expert, if a specialist is proud of his workload and does not seek to give himself the opportunity to relax and gain strength, then this behavior can be identified as a vivid sign of workaholism, but not diligence.

Neglecting personal relationships, canceling plans for work, and adapting all aspects of their lives to professional fulfillment are behaviors also characteristic of workaholics.

When there is any need that does not relate to the performance of work tasks, or when there is an opportunity to relax, people who are prone to workaholism begin to experience feelings of guilt, anxiety, and even shame. It seems to them that they are wasting time that they could devote to work.

In order to balance your life and get rid of workaholic syndrome, it is important to realize the existence of a problem and be ready to solve it. To do this, the specialist recommended setting a strict limit on working hours. For example, after 19:00, close all work chats, transfer unfinished tasks to the next day and leave work.

"To motivate yourself to leave work immediately after the end of the working day, you can sign up for a creative studio class at a certain time or arrange a meeting with friends," the expert advised.

She added that drawing up a checklist with mandatory items for the day will help to discipline yourself and not forget about basic needs. The list can include items such as lunch outside the workplace, a short charge every two hours, a 30-minute walk after the end of the working day.

Using digital detox, that is, disabling work notifications in her spare time, will also, in her opinion, help get rid of the habit of overworking.

"Workaholism is often disguised as dedication. But if you don't recover, your productivity will only decrease. Understanding the situation and following the suggested techniques and tips correctly will help bring harmony back to life and fill up with resources," the expert concluded.

Earlier, on April 22, Izvestia reported that among the Russians surveyed, almost half (49%) gave priority to Moscow in workaholism — the capital is traditionally associated with a dynamic rhythm of life and high competition.
