Rubio allowed further easing of sanctions against Syria
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has allowed further easing of sanctions against Syria. The corresponding statement was published on July 3 on the website of the U.S. Department of State.
"Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani about the historic actions of President [of the United States Donald] Trump on ending the US sanctions program and the state of emergency against Syria," the statement said.
It is specified that Rubio will consider further steps to review the decisions taken at the level of the United States and the United Nations on the inclusion of persons associated with Syria in the lists of terrorists. At the same time, he added that sanctions against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his associates, who pose a threat to international security, will not be lifted.
On July 1, Trump signed a decree lifting the sanctions regime against Syria, which had been in effect since 2004. It was clarified that the decree allows to weaken export controls on certain goods and lifts restrictions on the provision of foreign aid to Syria. However, the sanctions against former President Bashar al-Assad and his associates remained in force.
