The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested former world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. of Mexico on suspicion of possible ties to the cartel. This was reported on July 3 in The Guardian newspaper.

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in California and began the procedure for his deportation, citing ties to cartels, numerous criminal records and an active arrest warrant in Mexico for arms trafficking and organized crime," the publication says.

It is clarified that this arrest could have occurred as part of the tensions observed in the United States as a result of the immigration policy of former White House chief Joe Biden.

The publication noted that the deportation of Chavez, who first legally arrived in the United States on a six-month visa in 2023, "was not a priority." In 2024, the boxer applied for permanent residence, referring to his marriage to an American citizen who had previously been in a relationship with one of the sons of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, which strained federal agencies.

According to documents from the country's Department of Internal Security, despite this, he, "posing a blatant threat to public safety," was allowed to re-enter the country in 2025.

According to the newspaper, the boxer had long-standing ties with organized crime, in particular, with the Sinaloa cartel, which is involved in drug trafficking and has been named a "terrorist group" by US President Donald Trump. In addition, he was arrested in 2012 for drunk driving and charged in 2024 with illegal possession and trafficking of weapons.

Quincy Promes, a former football player of the Moscow football club Spartak, a citizen of the Netherlands, was arrested by Dubai police on June 12 for subsequent extradition to his homeland. An Amsterdam court in February 2024 sentenced him to six years in prison for drug smuggling, which the footballer passed off as sea salt. Before that, in 2023, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin at a family dinner.
