The noise map with AI will help to fight violators of silence

Students of the Russian University of Transport (MIIT) have created an algorithm for noise analysis in various residential areas. The system interprets the information from the sensors and makes an interactive map of the sound distribution across the territory. At the same time, artificial intelligence takes into account the peculiarities of the propagation of sound waves in urban areas and complex terrain. It also distributes noises into 16 categories. Thanks to this feature, you can understand what caused the loud noises, for example, a car or a party. The program is already ready to work, and the map will be available online this fall.

Their results were higher than those who had been trained by an ordinary teacher.

"All currently existing noise maps have certain disadvantages. They are either based on actual measurements, which are carried out very rarely, and the map loses its relevance. Or they are based on theoretical assumptions that such and such an object gives a certain noise level. We expect to achieve greater accuracy through the application, which will allow people to download measurement data on their own, as well as using cameras with the ability to measure noise, which have recently been certified and will soon be installed by the data center in Moscow. In addition, most maps do not take into account the terrain and buildings, which also greatly affects the accuracy," said Andrey Maksimov, the author of the project, a student at the Russian University of Transport.

The creators of the program believe that the system will be able to be used by various organizations whose responsibilities include monitoring compliance with sanitary and epidemiological noise standards: Rospotrebnadzor, the Department of Environmental Management and Environmental Protection of the city of Moscow, management companies and public organizations, as well as ordinary citizens who are faced with the harmful effects of loud sounds.
