Germany plans to conclude a deal with the United States on financing two Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was reported by the Bild newspaper on July 3, citing government sources.

"The government is currently feverishly working on an emergency solution to provide Ukraine with new defense systems and a sufficient number of missiles. Berlin is awaiting a response from US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on two Patriot air defense systems that Germany will finance for Ukraine," the publication says.

According to the publication, the corresponding request from Germany was sent several weeks ago at the initiative of Kiev after its unsuccessful attempts to conclude this deal on its own. According to the newspaper, the issue of the supply of Patriot air defense systems was discussed at meetings on Wednesday, July 2, when it became clear that it was impossible to reimburse frozen US military aid.

"Nevertheless, Germany and other allies now intend to try to supply Patriot systems to Ukraine from their own stocks," Bild summed up.

On July 2, NBC News reported on the Pentagon's decision to suspend the supply of dozens of interceptor missiles to the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the Patriot air defense system. On the same day, Bloomberg pointed out that European officials were "stunned" by this decision. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on July 3 that Europe should be prepared to reduce military aid from the United States, but he said he would "do everything" to ensure that the United States remained on the side of European countries.
