There are no prerequisites for blocking Telegram in Russia. This opinion was expressed by the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, Sergei Boyarsky, on Thursday, July 3.
"I don't see any prerequisites for blocking," the deputy said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
The parliamentarian noted that foreign messengers that continue to operate in Russia fulfill some of the requirements regarding data localization and cooperation in removing prohibited content.
"Instagram (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation – Ed.) is recognized as an extremist platform. He was banned. There is no extremism in Telegram," he concluded.
The day before, Pavel Durov, the creator of the Telegram messenger, denied rumors about the possible termination of the application in Russia.
