Moscow has agreed to recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on July 3 on its social media page.

According to the ministry, such a statement was made on Thursday during a meeting between Russian Ambassador to Kabul Dmitry Zhirnov and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaki.

"During the meeting, the Russian ambassador officially informed the Afghan authorities about the decision of his government to recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He called this decision a historic and important step towards strengthening relations between Afghanistan and Russia," the statement said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the information about the recognition to TASS.

On June 3, it was reported that Afghanistan appointed Movlavi Gul Hassan as the country's ambassador to Russia.

Earlier, on April 17, the Supreme Court of Russia suspended the ban and excluded the Afghan Taliban movement from the list of terrorist organizations.
