The Russian Consul in Baku held a three-hour meeting with the Russians who were detained in Azerbaijan. This was announced to Izvestia on July 3 by the press secretary of the Russian Embassy in the republic.
"The press service of the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan confirms that consular access to the arrested citizens of the Russian Federation has been provided. The head of the Consular Department of the Embassy communicated with our compatriots for three hours," the statement said.
Earlier in the day, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, said that consular access to 13 detained residents from Russia had been agreed.
On June 30, Azerbaijani security forces conducted an operation in the office of Sputnik Azerbaijan. Later, it was reported about the detention of two Russian journalists — Igor Kartavykh, the head of the agency's editorial office, and Evgeny Belousov, the editor-in-chief. Then it became known that eight more Russian citizens were detained in Baku. They were arrested for four months.
