If the European Union (EU) refuses to import Russian energy resources, Hungary and Slovakia will be at risk of security due to the lack of alternatives to raw materials. This was announced on July 3 by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini during a press conference following a meeting with the Hungarian leader in Bratislava.

"We share the same objections with Hungary regarding the roadmap for stopping the import of strategic energy resources from the Russian Federation. We consider this initiative to be a threat to the energy security of both countries and the economic stability of the region," Hlavne Spravy quoted him as saying.

According to Pellegrini, Slovakia currently has a "specific situation", as well as countries that do not have access to the sea and other alternative routes.

On June 27, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the EU intends to continue the initiative to abandon the import of Russian energy resources by 2028. He clarified that Hungary and Slovakia oppose the decision against the background of a likely increase in gas transit costs from other countries.
