- Hutsul denied the charges in her last word in court and asked for the case to be annulled.
The head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, in her last speech at a court hearing on July 3, stated that she had never violated the law and asked the court to acquit her.
“no. I didn't commit a crime. I ask that this criminal case be annulled. I am a mother of two minor children.: The eldest will be 16, the youngest will be three years old...> The prosecutor did not provide any evidence, because there is none, because I did nothing," Hutsul said.
The trial also concerns Svetlana Popan, an activist of the Pobeda opposition bloc. According to Judge Anna Cucirescu, the verdict of both defendants will be announced on August 5.
Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25 when her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country. Later, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and on April 9, the court replaced her measure of restraint with house arrest. On May 12, the court decided to extend the house arrest for another 30 days, and it has been extended several times since.
On July 1, prosecutors demanded that Hutsul be sentenced to nine years in prison in the case of "illegal financing of political parties."
Later, on July 2, Konstantin Starysh, a member of the Moldovan parliament from the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), reported that Sandu was settling personal scores by organizing the trial of Hutsul.
