The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, the expansion of research and development activities, as well as the solution of other tasks will give a new impetus to the development of marine robotics and the creation of unmanned marine systems. This was announced on July 3 by Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, head of the Maritime Board, at a meeting of the scientific and expert council of the Board.

He noted that in order to develop advanced technologies in the field of marine autonomous systems and robotic complexes, as well as to implement the Navy's Development Strategy until 2050, it is necessary to increase the competitiveness of Russian marine robotic complexes. For the future appearance of the Navy, it is necessary to expand scientific work to ensure technological independence.

Also, according to the head of the Marine Board, "it is necessary to widely develop and implement AI technologies" that allow autonomous detection, classification, tracking and hitting designated targets.

"It is necessary to ensure the creation of multifunctional autonomous uninhabited underwater vehicles for various purposes and modular types equipped with high—precision navigation systems using satellite and radio positioning," Patrushev added.

The presidential aide called the improvement of the domestic element base, the basis of control, navigation and situation control systems, an equally important task. In addition, it is necessary to form a scientific and production competence and testing center to ensure the full life cycle of marine robotic complexes.

"I have listed the key tasks, the solution of which will give the necessary impetus to the development of marine robotics and the creation of unmanned marine systems. I believe that during the meeting we will discuss other areas of development of marine robotics," Patrushev concluded.

On June 9, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Navy's development strategy is designed for the long term until 2050 to take into account modern technologies and the changing realities of combat operations. He noted that the length of the time plan is related to the specifics of building new ships, explaining that this is a very time-consuming process that takes a lot of time, so the plan is designed for the long term.

Patrushev announced on the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin had approved the Strategy for the Development of the Russian Navy for the period up to 2050, the first time such a document had been adopted in modern history.
