The girlfriend of 26-year-old Ilya Bezuglov from Kaliningrad, who was arrested in Baku, told Izvestia on June 3 that the police had come to detain her man at night while he was sleeping.

"We were in the apartment, sleeping. I woke up in the morning and saw a message from Ilya: "I'm standing in the courtyard with the police." He wrote that he had taken his passport with him, and later I found out that the police were knocking on our door," Anastasia Nevezhina said.

Anastasia and his relatives have not yet received any new information about the arrest of the young man. The family is currently looking for a lawyer for the Russian. As Nevezhina added, all the relatives are in a state of shock.

On June 30, Azerbaijani security forces conducted an operation in the office of Sputnik Azerbaijan. Later, it was reported about the detention of two Russian journalists — Igor Kartavykh, the head of the agency's editorial office, and Evgeny Belousov, the editor-in-chief. Then it became known that eight more Russian citizens were detained in Baku. They were arrested for four months on charges of organizing drug transit from Iran and cyber fraud.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded on July 2 to the arrest of the Russians. He noted that Moscow is closely monitoring developments and intends to protect the legitimate interests of its citizens.
