If European states do not increase their contributions to NATO, this could lead to serious consequences. This was stated by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia on July 3, commenting on the preparations of the alliance states for a possible reduction of American troops.

"The decisions that are being announced right now are related to reducing costs, and the presence of military personnel is, of course, a cost," the expert said.

Asafov also warned that European states should be prepared for possible changes in US policy and take measures in advance. In addition, he stressed that a decrease in Washington's support could affect not only Ukraine, but also other NATO allies.

"Here, extrapolating their own actions regarding budget increases, realizing that this will only happen in the distant 2035, they are well aware that US President Donald Trump is pragmatic," the political scientist said.

On the same day, the Euractiv portal reported that NATO countries in Europe had begun preparations for a possible drawdown of American troops, which now number about 80,000 people. Scenarios for the withdrawal of 10 to 20 thousand troops for their transfer to Asia and the Middle East are being discussed.
