The Armenian parliament passed laws to nationalize Karapetyan's "Electric Grids"


The Armenian parliament has adopted in the final reading laws allowing the nationalization of the company "Electric Networks of Armenia", which belongs to the detained businessman Samvel Karapetyan. The broadcast was conducted on July 3 on the parliament's YouTube channel.
65 deputies voted for the proposal, 27 against it. The opposition expressed its disagreement, which considers the process illegal. There was also a scuffle during the parliament session after the words about provocations against Russia. One of the deputies threw a bottle at a colleague, which provoked an argument.
The adopted amendments imply that the regulator will be able to organize administrative proceedings if the security of the energy sector is threatened, consumer rights or licensing obligations are violated.
If the company refuses the license, the commission will oblige the legal entity to continue working or transfer it to a temporary manager. It is specified that the head of the authorized commission can independently adopt a program to eliminate the identified violations, and transfer his powers.
In addition, according to the amendments, the government is able to acquire the company if it decides to sell. The price of a corporation may not exceed its market value, which is determined by the law "On Valuation Activities".
On June 30, at a press conference, the acting Director General of Electric Grids of Armenia, David Kazinyan, said that the bill on nationalization was illiterate. He noted that the company intends to apply to the relevant international authorities to protect its interests. At the same time, Karapetyan will not make a deal in exchange for his freedom, Ghazinyan stressed.
Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18, he was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia and arrested for two months. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan called the businessman's detention an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC).
