Merz urged to prepare for less U.S. involvement in European affairs

Europe should prepare for a reduction in US involvement in its affairs. This was announced on July 3 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a speech at a conference on the banking sector.
"We will do everything, I will do everything so that the United States of America is on our side. But we also have to prepare for the fact that, at least, America's involvement for Europe and in Europe will decrease," he said.
At the same time, according to the Chancellor, Europe is able to show independent results in trade and economic policy.
"We will jointly defend our interests in the world, and I am determined, as Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, to assume a leadership role here in Europe," Merz added.
Earlier that day, the Euroactiv portal reported on NATO's preparations to reduce the US contingent in Europe. According to the portal, it will take many years for European NATO countries to fully restore the alliance's combat capability after the possible withdrawal of some American troops.
