The largest Martian meteorite will be put up for sale for $4 million
The largest Martian meteorite weighing 24.5 kg is being put up for sale at Sotheby's in New York, with a planned price of $4 million. This was reported on July 2 by CNN.
"A meteorite is expected <... It will be sold at auction at the end of this month for $4 million," the article says.
It is specified that a significant part (21.2% by volume) of the meteorite, known as NWA 16788, consists of maskelinite glass. It was formed when an asteroid crashed into the surface of Mars with tremendous force and triggered a metamorphosis.
In total, about 400 Martian meteorites have been discovered on Earth. Such fragments of the planet fell into space when it collided with other space objects.
It is reported that the space rock was discovered in Niger in 2023 by a meteorite hunter.
Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), announced on March 18 that Moscow was ready to discuss the idea of working together in space with Washington. He also noted that the Russian side would discuss the prospects of cooperation with American entrepreneur, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
