A telephone conversation between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin broke the silence of European leaders. The Spanish newspaper El País wrote about this on July 1.

"The conversation, which lasted more than two hours, put an end to a long silence between the two leaders, who agreed to stay in touch," the article says.

The publication writes that the European Union (EU) has avoided communication with the Russian leader for quite a long time. Only Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban engaged in such contacts.

The day before, Putin and Macron had a telephone conversation. During the conversation, the heads of state noted that Moscow and Paris bear a special responsibility for maintaining peace in the Middle East. In addition, the presidents discussed the Ukrainian conflict.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin's talks with his French counterpart were very informative.
