Early watermelons can be dangerous to health, as some Russian farmers abuse various fertilizers for their growth. Associate Professor of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, economist Dmitry Morkovkin warned about this on Wednesday, July 2.

"Modern logistics flows and transport corridors allow us to eat watermelons all year round. Watermelons from Brazil, Ecuador and Costa Rica are imported to Russia in winter. And in early spring they ripen in Iran," the economist said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

According to him, safe Russian watermelons appear in late July and early August, and early specimens are considered not very useful due to the use of accelerated cultivation technologies using growth stimulants.

Farmers often resort to intensive cultivation methods, using nitrates, pesticides and other chemical compounds to stimulate growth and protect against pests. Such watermelons can be dangerous to the health of consumers, Morkovkin explained.
