The trial of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Hutsul, was a reprisal for intimidation of opponents. This was announced on July 2 by Alexey Petrovich, head of the Pobeda National Committee.

"The trial of Bashkan <...> is a political massacre. Cruel and revealing. The government is trying to intimidate its opponents by pulling non—existent evidence by the ears," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to Petrovic, the Moldovan authorities' goal is to deprive the head of state of his autonomy, the right to vote and force him to "thoughtlessly step towards the edge of the abyss called "European integration."

Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25 when her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country. The head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and later her preventive measure was replaced with house arrest. In May, the court decided to extend the house arrest for 30 days, and it has been extended several times since.

On July 1, prosecutors in court demanded that Hutsul be sentenced to nine years in prison in the case of "illegal financing of political parties." In turn, Bashkan called these charges a complete deception, adding that the criminal case should be annulled because it is illegal.
