The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, went beyond his authority when he proposed to limit the right of veto. This was announced on July 2 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

This is how she commented on Guterres' statement in favor of limiting the right of veto in the Security Council of the world organization.

"Unfortunately, I quoted the UN Secretary General, who began to talk about a topic that is beyond his competence: the right of veto," she said at a briefing.

In addition, Zakharova recalled that the issue of Security Council reform does not fall within the competence of the UN Secretariat. According to her, the Russian side is convinced that it is not the law itself that should be criticized, but the line of Western countries that are unwilling to seek compromises.

Alexander Venediktov, Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council, said on June 24 that the UN needs to adapt to new realities, as well as carry out targeted transformations. He also pointed out the special importance of conscientious observance of the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interrelationship.
