Russia is sincerely interested in stability in Armenia. This was announced on July 2 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"Russia is sincerely interested in stability in fraternal Armenia, simply because it is beneficial for us, among other things," she said.

In this way, Zakharova commented on the charges brought against Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian businessman and head of the Tashir Group of companies, and Mikael Ajapakhyan, Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), for publicly calling for the seizure of power in Armenia.

In addition, Zakharova stressed that Russia stands for the preservation of the rule of law in Armenia "based on the constitution" and ensuring the rights and freedoms of citizens.

On June 18, it was reported that Karapetyan was detained at his home for making statements in support of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It was clarified that Interior Ministry officers arrived at Karapetyan's house immediately after he made a statement in defense of the church. Later, his lawyer Armen Feroyan stated that the businessman was charged with publicly calling for the seizure of power in Armenia.

Armenian Orthodox Church Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan was detained on June 27. The Investigative Committee of Armenia has also opened a criminal case against him for calls to overthrow the government in the country. In turn, Armenian lawyer Varazdat Harutyunyan stated that this is absurd from a legal point of view.
