French President Emmanuel Macron is optimistic about Russian Leader Vladimir Putin's position on Iran's nuclear program after a telephone conversation between the two leaders the day before. This was announced on July 2 by the official representative of the French government, Sophie Prima.

"This is quite an important event, as they have not communicated for a long time, and yesterday they talked for two hours, mainly on the issue of Iran and the Treaty on the Non—Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)," she said at a briefing following the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers, which was broadcast on the official page of the Elysee Palace on the social network. According to her, Macron wanted to hear Putin's position on the issue.

"He [Macron] told us that he is quite optimistic about Putin's position, which opposes Iran's withdrawal from this treaty," said Prima.

She noted that this underscores the need to find a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program, and will allow the resumption of visits by representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to monitor the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Putin and Macron had a telephone conversation on July 1. During the conversation, the heads of state noted that Moscow and Paris bear a special responsibility for maintaining peace in the Middle East and preserving the nuclear non-proliferation regime. In addition, the presidents discussed the Ukrainian conflict.

Later that day, Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian issued a decree suspending the country's cooperation with the IAEA.
