A law has come into force in Denmark, according to which women will be drafted into the army on an equal basis with men. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 1.

"According to a law passed by the Danish Parliament in June 2023, Denmark will require women who turn 18 after July 1, 2025, to register to participate in the days of assessment of readiness for potential military service, which corresponds to the measures already in force for men," the report says.

It clarifies that this was done so that the country could recruit more soldiers and strengthen its defenses amid increased security concerns across Europe. Before that, women were allowed to join the army on a voluntary basis. So, in 2024, 24% of all recruits were women.

The Danish Armed Forces are currently in the process of adjusting barracks and equipment to be more suitable for women. The main focus is on the form and equipment of the type of backpacks.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on June 26 that the 32 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) had promised to increase defense spending and allocate 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) for this, which was a "historic moment."
