- The doctor explained the reasons for the exacerbation of gastrointestinal diseases in the summer

Exacerbations of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) in the summer become a frequent occurrence, which is facilitated by several factors - a violation of the medication regime, dietary changes and physiological changes caused by high temperatures. Alexander Bykov, clinical pharmacologist at R-Pharm, told about this on July 1.
The doctor explained that physiological changes often occur in the summer, which affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, the secretion of digestive enzymes decreases and intestinal motility changes.
In addition, people's diets change in the heat. So, people are more likely to consume cold drinks and raw foods, and this can disrupt the digestive system and lead to cramps. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pancreatitis, and functional dyspepsia should pay special attention to dietary changes in the summer, the specialist recommends.
"In some cases, it may be necessary to temporarily adjust the dosage of enzyme preparations or change the time of their administration. The effectiveness of therapy for gastrointestinal diseases largely depends on the correct intake of medications, taking into account the patient's nutritional characteristics," the doctor quotes "Газета.Ru ".
In the summer, patients with chronic gastrointestinal diseases experience a deterioration in their well-being, including due to changes in their usual medication regimen, adds Bykov.
To prevent seasonal exacerbations, the specialist recommended gradually introducing new fruits into the diet, controlling portions and trying not to overeat during the holidays. The specialist added that in the hot season it is also important to avoid dehydration and control the temperature of food, as sudden temperature fluctuations reduce the activity of enzymes and worsen digestion.
On June 27, Svetlana Burnatskaya, a general practitioner and occupational therapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), spoke about proper nutrition in the heat. So, according to the doctor, salads, in which you can add a little protein, such as eggs, fish, seafood or chicken, will be an ideal option for summer. The specialist also reminded about the need to drink at least 1.5–2 liters of clean water per day.
