The United Nations (UN) is aware of the arrest in Baku of Igor Kartavykh, head of Sputnik Azerbaijan, and Evgeny Belousov, editor-in-chief. This was announced on July 1 by the representative of the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.

"We hope that everything will be settled through diplomatic channels and that freedom of journalistic activity will be ensured," TASS quoted him as saying.

On June 30, Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies conducted an operation in the office of Sputnik Azerbaijan. Later it was reported about the detention of Kartavykh and Belousov.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow is attentive to information about the detention of Russian journalists. According to him, Russia expects to reach an agreement with the Azerbaijani side on their release in the near future.
