- The State Duma reacted to the words of the German Chancellor about the European "nuclear umbrella"

The arguments of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about the possibility of creating a European "nuclear umbrella" are worrying. Alexey Chepa, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, expressed this opinion on Tuesday, July 1.
According to the MP, the arguments of some countries about nuclear weapons cause great concern, and with such statements they fuel conflict in the world.
Chepa believes that Germany does not even have the right to talk about the possibility of having nuclear weapons.
"We understand that even talking about nuclear weapons on the part of Germany is changing the entire global architecture, which was created back in 1945," the parliamentarian said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
Earlier in the day, Merz said that Germany aims to maintain its partnership with the United States and preserve the American "nuclear umbrella," but is also open to discussions on the creation of a European atomic shield, RT reports.
On June 8, Jens Spahn, a leading politician of Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, called on Europe to become an independent nuclear power, NSN reports. According to him, the countries should hold a debate on an independent European nuclear defense, but "only under the leadership of Germany," writes RIAMO.
