Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Rahman Mustafayev was handed a note demanding the release of Russian journalists detained in Baku. This was reported on July 1 on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The head of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission was handed a verbal note demanding the immediate release of the Russian journalists detained in Baku," the statement said.

In addition, the ministry added that the ambassador was protested in connection with the unfriendly actions of Baku. It is specified that these include the cancellation of high—level events, a Russophobic campaign in the Azerbaijani media, the detention of Russian journalists and the cancellation of all cultural events in the republic with the participation of performers from the Russian Federation.

On June 30, Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies conducted an operation in the office of the Sputnik Azerbaijan news agency. Later it was reported that Azerbaijani security forces detained Igor Kartavykh, the head of the editorial office of Sputnik Azerbaijan, and Yevgeny Belousov, the editor-in-chief.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow is attentive to information about the detention of Russian journalists in Baku. According to him, Russia expects to reach an agreement with the Azerbaijani side on their release in the near future.
