Last month, 2,074 accidents involving children and teenagers under the age of 16 occurred in Russia. This was reported to Izvestia on July 1 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. 76 minors were killed and 2,279 injured in these car accidents, the department said.

One of the main reasons for the increase in accidents among underage drivers is the lack of proper adult supervision, according to the State Traffic Inspectorate. Often, parents often purchase equipment for their children themselves, such as mopeds or so-called pit bikes, which are prohibited from driving on public roads, forgetting to explain to them the basic rules of travel. In addition, the legal age for driving a particular vehicle is often ignored, the Main Directorate for Road Safety emphasizes THE Ministry OF Internal Affairs OF THE Russian Federation.

"Driving a moped and scooter requires a driver's license with an open category "M". You can get it after studying at a driving school from the age of 16. At the same time, it is possible to travel on a moped on public roads only in a motorcycle helmet, provided that you have perfect command of the technique of driving such vehicles," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and prevention of child traffic injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

He recalled that under current legislation, a fine of 5-15 thousand rubles is provided for driving a moped, scooter, motorcycle, or car without the appropriate license, while the vehicle is delayed and placed in a specialized parking lot. In addition, the fine for transferring the right to drive a vehicle to a child is 30 thousand rubles. Their parents or legal representatives are responsible for teenagers under the age of 16 who were driving vehicles, Hrantskevich noted.

"Parents need to strengthen control over the leisure time of teenagers, as well as the availability of vehicles for them. In no case should the keys to cars and motor vehicles be left in a place accessible to the child, thereby giving them the opportunity for a dangerous trip. Children's leisure time should be strictly controlled, especially in the evening, in order to avoid the risk of accidents involving them," Hrantskevich said in an interview with Izvestia.

The State Traffic Inspectorate asks parents to strictly observe traffic regulations, thereby setting an example for their children. In addition, the department recalls the mandatory use of retroreflective elements on clothing by adults and children when they are outdoors at night and in conditions of insufficient visibility.

On June 18, it was reported that the State Duma proposed to introduce a ban on the operation of pit bikes on public roads in the traffic regulations and to provide penalties for adults for transferring pit bikes to children in the Administrative Code.
