The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan announced the detention of seven people as a result of an operation at the office of the Sputnik Azerbaijan agency. This was reported by Sputnik Armenia on July 1.

"Seven people were detained in Baku after searches at the Sputnik Azerbaijan editorial office, two of them were arrested," the agency said in a statement, citing the republic's Interior Ministry.

It is noted that a criminal case has been opened under the article on fraud and the legalization of property obtained by criminal means.

"Rossiya Segodnya is deeply concerned about the detention in Baku of two Russian citizens, the leaders of Sputnik Azerbaijan. Several editorial staff members, citizens of Azerbaijan, were also detained along with them," the Russia Today media group said in a statement published by RIA Novosti.

In addition, they added that Igor Kartavykh, the head of the editorial office, needs to take insulin regularly due to diabetes, and his state of health is alarming.

On June 30, Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies conducted an operation at the office of the Sputnik Azerbaijan news agency. According to Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Rossiya Segodnya media group and RT, the staff did not get in touch. Later it was reported that Azerbaijani security forces detained Kartavykh and Evgeny Belousov, editor-in-chief of Sputnik Azerbaijan.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow is attentive to information about the detention of Russian journalists in Baku. According to him, the Russian Federation expects to reach an agreement with the Azerbaijani side on their release in the near future.
