The dissemination by the Ukrainian side of photos and videos of prisoners of war is contrary to international humanitarian law (IHL). This was reported on June 30 from the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the human rights situation in Ukraine from December 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025.

"OHCHR documented a number of cases where images and videos of soldiers captured by Ukraine were published and subsequently distributed on the Internet, including by the Ukrainian authorities and in the media," the document says.

The UN also stressed that the disclosure of information about the identities of prisoners of war, including citizens of third countries, may put their lives at risk after returning to their homeland or negatively affect their families.

An OHCHR report dated June 30 reported that more than half of the prisoners of war captured by Ukraine had confirmed the facts of torture in Ukrainian captivity. They clarified that they were subjected to beatings, dog attacks, mock executions, humiliation and other forms of ill-treatment.
