Armenian politician Ghazaryan pointed to the EU's disinterest in new members

Statements about the rapprochement of Armenia and the European Union (EU) are groundless, as the EU is not interested in new members. This was stated to Izvestia on June 30 by the former head of the office of the Constitutional Court of Armenia, the head of the Independence Movement, economist Edgar Ghazaryan.
"There is no such way to Europe. Because the European Union does not want to have new members of the organization, including Armenia. Armenia itself declares its desire to be a member of the European Union, but this also has no foundation. That is, these are empty statements, and there is nothing there," Ghazaryan said.
According to him, Armenia is not currently seeking to develop relations with the EU. Instead, it is simply destroying relations with Russia and other strategic partners.
Ghazaryan also added that Armenia promotes a "pro-Turkish policy" due to Turkey's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) and its associated agreement with the EU, which can help Armenia establish certain ties with Europe. The head of the movement stressed that the country's authorities promote the "anti-Armenian policy" most of all.
"The fact that he (Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. — Ed.) is doing it now, it has nothing to do with the government's program and the promise of a civil contract when they participated in the parliamentary elections," Ghazaryan said.
On the same day, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced that Armenia and the EU had started discussing cooperation in the field of security and defense. He specified that it would be aimed at strengthening Armenia's resilience and further developing democratic institutions.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on June 13 that the republic would not be able to be a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) at the same time and the European Union. However, he stressed that the decision should be made by the citizens of the country, but until then, the government will continue to implement reforms aimed at approaching EU standards.
