Merkel criticized the new asylum policy in Germany

On June 30, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized the new policy of German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt due to refusals to grant asylum at the borders.
"If someone says 'asylum' here on the German border, they need to go through the procedure first. Right on the border, if you want, but the procedure. This is how I understand European law," Tageschau quoted her as saying.
On May 7, the Bild newspaper reported that migrants were banned from entering all German land borders, even if they applied for asylum. Shortly after, Dobrindt gave an oral order to the Federal Police Department of Germany to strengthen border control and increase refusals when trying to enter the country.
The Interior Minister also ruled that children, pregnant women and "vulnerable persons" should be excluded from the new entry rules.
At the same time, on May 26, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said that the European Union (EU) needs to review the rules for granting asylum, since the norms and rules in force in the association no longer correspond to their original concept.
