Alexey Chepa, First Deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said on Monday, June 30, about the militarization of the European economy, commenting on Poland's plans to increase production of howitzer shells.

According to the parliamentarian, weapons manufactured in Europe will be sold to Ukraine because it is profitable for them.

Earlier in the day, Polish Minister of State Property Jakub Jaworowski told the Financial Times (FT) newspaper that the country plans to increase production of artillery ammunition for howitzers and other long-range systems fivefold by 2026 in order to reduce dependence on imported weapons.

"The increase in production today specifically indicates the militarization of the economies of European countries <...> That is, European countries are ready to produce these weapons, it is profitable for them, they are ready to sell them," Chepa said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

The MP noted that the desire of some European countries to withdraw from the Ottawa Agreement on the prohibition of the use of anti-personnel mines suggests that they are going to produce mines on their own. In addition, he recalled the significant increase in the NATO budget for military spending, as well as the desire of many European countries to increase the production of weapons.

The Telegraph newspaper reported on June 25 that NATO members have committed to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense by 2035. It is specified that they are going to allocate funds to finance basic defense needs, as well as to achieve NATO's potential targets.
