The European Union (EU) will not be able to provide protection to Armenia, despite constant promises of security, as Europe itself has big problems in this area. Arman Abovyan, an Armenian political analyst, told Izvestia on June 30.

"As for European security, <...> it's not even funny, because Europe itself is facing a very serious problem of ensuring its security and relies solely on the same US Armed Forces. <...> Europe has neither the resources nor, most importantly, the desire to defend Armenia from its enemies," he said.

According to the expert, there is no rapprochement between Armenia and the EU in the form in which they want to present it.

"There is an attempt to enter the South Caucasus region by, say, a pan-British, or Anglo—Saxon, or - whatever you want to call it — a European force vector. In other words, we cannot say that Armenia is joining the EU in the classical sense," Abovyan stressed.

The political scientist added that in fact Armenia is "going to Turkey," but all this is presented under the guise of rapprochement between Yerevan and Brussels.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on June 13 that the republic would not be able to be a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) at the same time and the European Union. He noted that the decision should be made by the citizens of the country, but until then, the government will continue to implement reforms aimed at approaching EU standards.
