The Green Party demanded urgent steps to ban AfD
After the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) at its congress supported the preparation of a court application to ban the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, the Green Party called for immediate practical measures. This was reported by the Welt newspaper on June 29.
According to the newspaper, representatives of the Green faction in the Bundestag — Parliamentary Secretary Irene Mihalic and Deputy Chairman Konstantin von Notz — said that a lot of time had already been lost on this topic. In their opinion, Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil from the SPD "has not yet become a driving force" on the issue of banning AFD.
"The Ministries of the Interior, led by the SPD, should begin active work together with the CDU/CSU in order to gather the necessary grounds for launching the ban process," the deputies noted.
In addition, the Greens called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to determine their position and support the initiative. According to them, it is urgently necessary to convene a special conference of the Ministers of Internal Affairs of the federal lands to discuss the issue of banning AFG and coordinating actions.
On the same day, the SPD voted for immediate preparations to ban the Alternative for Germany. Calls for a ban intensified after the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the AFD as a right-wing extremist force. However, this classification is now being challenged by the party in court and has been temporarily suspended.
On May 2, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Germany classified the AFD as a right-wing extremist organization that threatens democracy in the country. On May 5, the party filed a lawsuit against the federal agency for this decision. The Bild newspaper reported on May 8 that counterintelligence had temporarily suspended the definition of the party as right-wing extremist pending a court decision.
