Ex-adviser to the French president accused the United States of humiliating Europe

The United States has declared itself an imperial power that can afford to humiliate and "trample" European countries, whose leaders feel clearly weaker in the face of Washington's pressure. This was announced on June 29 by Jacques Attali, former adviser to French President Francois Mitterrand.

"The United States is behaving like an imperial power that takes endless pleasure in trampling Europe. <...> We are invertebrates. We have no head [on our shoulders], no backbone, the Europeans are just "sleeping," Attali said on the LCI TV channel.

He also added that the last NATO summit was a real disgrace for its participants. The former adviser to the French president called on the leaders of the European Union (EU) countries to stop "flattering" US President Donald Trump, who, according to him, continues to humiliate the Old World.

The NATO Summit was held in The Hague on June 24-25. Following the meeting, the countries agreed to raise defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP).

After that, on June 26, the heads of the EU member states confirmed the goal of achieving the ability to autonomously solve defense and security tasks in five years by adopting an appropriate document. They also noted the importance of joint projects aimed at improving the defense capabilities of the EU countries.
