Szijjarto announced the lifting of US anti-Russian sanctions

The United States lifted a number of sanctions against the Russian Federation, which prevented the construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant (NPP) in Hungary under the Rosatom project. This was announced on June 29 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
"Fortunately, since January, the president [Donald Trump] has appeared at the White House in Washington, who sees Hungary as a friend. Based on this, the US government lifted sanctions on investments in the Paks nuclear power plant," Szijjarto said on M1 TV channel.
He noted that in November 2024, the administration of then-US President Joe Biden imposed sanctions on Gazprombank, through which the project was financed.
According to him, if investments could not be restored, the Hungarian people would have to pay several times more for utilities.
US President Donald Trump said on June 16 that he did not want to tighten sanctions against Russia, as he hoped to reach an agreement on Ukraine. He also added that he would be "very happy" if a peaceful settlement of the conflict could be reached.
